TEACHERS ATTEND WORKSHOP IN PUNTA GORDA

Over two hundred teachers are attending a workshop in Punta Gorda Town. The Workshop is being sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Teachers for a Better Belize (TFABB).

“Organizers of the event say that 230 registered participants include principals, primary and pre-school teachers, Toledo District Education Manager Oscar Requeña speaks about the workshop. ”

Oscar Requeña, Toledo District Education Manager:

“This year we are focusing on three main areas. We are focusing on Language Arts Literacy as well as HFLA, Health and Family Life Education and training also for our principals. These are the main areas of focus for this year’s workshop. I want to ad also that the ministry of Education is very much appreciative of the support received from TFABB. This partnership extends over 10 years and it started out at Big Falls and today has extended to all the schools of Toledo District. I am certain that over the years the workshop has impacted the level of education that we are providing for our teachers and our students and we are hoping that we can continue to improve and build on this partnership that we have with TFABB. I want to say that this year we are very much excited about the fact that we have been able to train 16 curriculum coaches, Belizean curriculum coaches. These coaches will be provided in service training during the year to our teachers as well as support to ensure that the training that we undertake during the summer will continue to have the impact that we desire to have.”

Paul Mahung, Love FM PG Correspondent:

“Requena further commented:”

Oscar Requeña, Toledo District Education Manager:

“It is important to note that this year’s summer workshop is keeping with the ministry’s five year action plan in which one of the areas that the Ministry seeks to address is the whole issue of continuous professional development for our teachers. I also want to add that during the third week we will be focusing on a pilot program which we will be proving training for our infant teachers. This is called the Systematic Synthetic Phonics program, we are bringing in all our infant teachers and they will participate in the training provided by Belizean facilitators as well. On a final note I want to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the district education centre staff, Teachers for a Better Belize, the local management as well as everybody else who has assisted one way or the other in ensuring a very successful 2006 workshop.”

Paul Mahung, Love FM PG Correspondent:

“Oscar Requena. The three-week workshop is coordinated by Toledo District Education Center staff of the ministry of Education, management of primary schools of Toledo and Teachers for a Better Belize volunteers from the USA and Canada. The coordinating team is headed by Toledo Curriculum Development Officer, Estevan Asi and Kathie Dolan and Anne Frahn from Teachers for a Better Belize. Workshop sessions are accommodated at St. Peter Claver Parish facilities in Town.”

TEACHERS IN THE TOLEDO DISTRICT ATTEND WORKSHOP

August 16, 2006

A Professional Development Workshop for Teachers in Toledo ends today in Punta Gorda Town. With a report here is Karina Mahung.

Karina Mahung, Love FM :

“During closing remarks Deputy Chief Education Officer Allen Gennity said that the Toledo District has been one of the Districts with the greatest participation rate of its teachers in its continuous Professional Development Program held in August. Gennity went on to say that he believes that knowledge is most useful when it is applied to bring about the desired benefits in a more useful way as in the transmission of teaching and learning in the classroom. In his address to the workshop participants Gennity challenged Toledo teachers to apply the knowledge acquired and to use in the classroom new ways of addressing the learning needs of their students and to constantly share the knowledge with each other and other teachers to heighten the awareness and competence so that they too can be encouraged to perform at higher levels. He further challenged the teachers to continue to strive to expand their knowledge base in order to make them more competent and efficient to deliver education which is relevant and of good quality to all their students. Gennity reminded the teachers that learning to know learning to do learning to be and learning to live with each other are important components in education. On behalf of the Minister of Education Deputy Chief Education Officer Gennity extended congratulations and gratitude to the teachers who completed their training program and are now more prepared to deliver the contents in their effort to be more effective teachers, the registered two hundred and seventy workshop participants included principals, primary and preschool teachers of the Toledo District. The two and a half weeks Teachers Development Workshop was coordinated by staff personnel of the Toledo District Education Center with support from the Minster of Education, School Mangers and Teachers for a Better Belize volunteers from the USA and Canada.”
